Remarks
- Systematics: Lectotype specimen (designated in Hodgson, 2023) specimen nearest upper label, other specimens paralectotypes. (ii) Second slide with 6 adult female paralectotype specimens (designated in Hodgson, 2023), labelled as above. Almost all specimens have some damage to the venter and most contain well-developed nymphs. Both slides are deposited in NHM. Platylecannium cyperi clearly belongs to the Paralecaniini and to the group of genera with multilocular disc-pores but no ventral tubular ducts. In lacking legs altogether, it is similar to P. cocotis but differs in having a wide band of dorsal areolations submarginally. Platylecanium cocotis also has fewer longitudinal rows of reticulations—possibly only 5 across the body. It is likely that, as in other Platylecanium species, some or all of the dorsal setae on P. cyperi are each situated on a swollen membranous cone, although this was not clear. The presence of marginal setae along the inner margins of each stigmatic cleft is also unusual, but also noted in P. castilloae. (Hodgson, 1994).
- Structure: “Dark yellowish brown when dry. Body elliptic or elongate oval, flattened, not pointed at both ends, strongly sclerotized” (Takahashi 1950). Slide-mounted material: Body elongate-oval, large, 6–7 mm long, 2.3–3.0 mm wide; anal cleft with sides adpressed, about 1/6th body length; stigmatic clefts distinct. (Hodgson, 2023)
- General Remarks: Good description and illustration of adult female by Takahashi (1950a). The key in the paper, Joshi, S., & Firake, D.M. 2019 First record of Platylecanium nepalense Takagi (Hemiptera: Coccomorpha: Coccidae) from India, with redescription and a key to the species of Platylecanium Cockerell & Robinson, is for species of Platylecanium in the world, but by mistake Joshi wrote it's heading as key to the species known from India.
