Remarks
- Systematics: Philephedra paralutea is most similar to Ph. lutea (Cockerell, 1893) and Ph. ferelutea Granara de Willink, 1999, with which it shares the presence of inverted tubular ducts restricted to the body margins. However, Ph. paralutea can be separated from these other two species by having numerous (>32) inverted dorsal tubercles on the submargins of head, thorax and abdomen, whereas the latter two species have only 12 or fewer around the body (up to 12 around the body in Ph. ferelutea, and fewer than 10 around the body in Ph. lutea). (Kondo et al., 2026)
- Structure: The adult female of Ph. paralutea can be diagnosed by the combination of the following features: (i) live young adult female insect without a test, body convex, grayish, with some yellowish to orange patches present marginally, often triangular; mature adult females producing a cottony ovisac and body becoming lifted off of leaf surface; (ii) inverted dorsal tubercles present marginally to submarginally, numerous (total for dorsum 32–45); (iii) dorsal tubular ducts present on middle areas of dorsum, absent marginally and posteriorly; (iv) dorsal derm without areolations; (v) preopercular pores arranged in two broad, parallel submedial bands extending from area anterior to anal plates to about level of metathorax; (vi) anal plates together subquadrate, located at about 1/5 of body length from posterior margin; (vii) marginal setae each spinose and conical, all subequal in length; (viii) each stigmatic area containing 3 stigmatic spines, similar in shape to marginal setae but slightly larger or with broader apices; (ix) ventral microducts small, scattered; and (x) ventral tubular ducts of 3 types. (Kondo et al., 2026)
