Remarks
- Systematics: Peliococcus schmuttereri sp. n. can be distinguished from all other species of Peliococcus by having the following combination of characters: (i) 9-segmented antenna, (ii) absence of multilocular disc pores and tubular ducts on dorsum and ventral area anterior to anterior ostioles; (iii) presence of cerarii each composed of two setae, with 15 pairs marginally and 8–9 in a longitudinal row medially on dorsum between metathorax and abdominal segment VII; and (iv) dorsal tubular ducts of only one size. (Caballero et al. 2024)
- Structure: Body elongated oval, 2.8 ± 0.4 (2.2–3.4) [2.2] mm long and 1.6 ± 0.2 (1.1–1.9) [1.1] mm wide. Eyes on margin, each 63.3 ± 9.1 (47–83) [54–57] µm in diameter. (Caballero et al. 2024). Live female with thin wax powder layer. Anal lobes very clearly defined. Antennae consistently 9-segmented, 2nd segment longest, 3rd and last segment about the same length. Legs slender, claw with small tooth on the inside. Loop of bristles about 2 1/2 times as long as labium. Circulus relatively small, oval. Ostioles clearly visible, with sclerotic inner edges, each lip with about 9-11 three-pored nozzles. Anal ring with one outer row and two inner rows of pores and 6 bristles with about twice the length of the ring diameter. 18 pairs of marginal cerarii on distinct, sclerotic bases. Marginal cerarii on sclerotic anal lobes with two strong, conical spines and 1-2 submarginal spines of equal size, two smaller spines and 4-6 three-pored glands (Schmutterer 2002).
- General Remarks: In Schmutterer’s (2002) paper, no type material is designated and no depository is specified, making Spinococcus kozari Schmutterer, 2002 a nomen nudum. Additonally, Spinococcus was synonymized with Peliococcus by Danzig in 1980. Taxonomic discussion, redescription, illustration, and microphotographs in Caballero et al. (2024).
