Nomenclatural History

• Micrococcus silvestrii Leonardi 1907b: 136-142. Type data: ITALY: Catanzaro, Calabria in nests of Tapinoma erraticum, by F. Silvestri. Lectotype, female, by subsequent designation (MarottSpTr1995,183). Type depository: Portici: Dipartimento de Entomologia e Zoologia Agraria di Portici, Universita di Napoli Federico II, Italy; accepted valid name Illustr.
• Micrococcus oviformis Paoli 1915: 241. Type data: ITALY: Sardinia. , , junior synonym (discovered by Leonar1920, 443). Notes: The type material of this species has not been located. Marotta (personal communication, September 29, 1998) stated that there was no material in IFSP.
• Micrococcus Silvestrii Leonardi, 1907; Balachowsky 1932d: XLI. misspelling of species epithet

Remarks

• Systematics: Bodenheimer (1943) recorded Micrococcus silverstrii from Israel, but this is now considered a misidentification of M. bodenheimeri (Ben-Dov, personal communication, 30/07/1999).
• Structure: Adult female is red, broadly oval and subcircular to pyriform. The appendages are very small and dark yellow. A white waxy tubular filament protrudes from the anal end. Adult male is apterous, red and lightly depressed (Marotta et al., 1995).
• Biology: This species was originally collected from the nest of the ant Tapinoma erraticum (Marotta et al., 1995).
• General Remarks: Detailed description and illustration of adult female, first instar, second-instar female, third-instar female and adult male by Marotta et al. (1995).
