Remarks
- Systematics: Lepidosaphes buzenensis is allied to L. gloverii, but the large second exuviae and rather short scale widening gradually toward posterior extremity are good characters for separating it from the latter (Kuwana, 1909). Takagi felt that the original description and illustration were inadequate. He recollected specimens from the island of Amami-Osima that he viewed as L. busenensis and stated that they were similar to L. laterochitinosa, but differ in the median lobes separated from each other by a narrow space. In addition, there was a "peculiar" sclerotization on the thorax which is mainly dorsal, covering almost the whole lateral halves of the dorsal surface of the thorax and partially extending onto the marginal area of the ventral surface at full development. (Takagi, 2003a)
- Structure: Female scale long and narrow, straight, widening gradually toward posterior extremity, dark brown, opaque, with very narrow irregular flattened border, which is whitish gray and transversely marked by curved lines of growth. Exuviae pale yellow, subtransparent, occupying about one third the total length of the scale. 1st exuviae oval; segmentation distinct. Ventral scale incomplete, broadly divided. Male scale resembles female, but is smaller. Adult female long, elliptical, lateral margins nearly straight, slightly wider toward posterior end (Kuwana, 1909).
- General Remarks: Best description and illustration by Kuwana (1909). Takagi (2003a) lists 8 similar species that he suggested should be reviewed in relationship to this species.
