Remarks
- Systematics: Formosaspis fanjingensis is similar to F. huangshanensis in both species lacking gland tubercles near the posterior spiracles and gland spines; and in both having only 1 pair of lobes (L1). However, they can be distinguished by the following characteristics of the adult female (character states of F. huangshanensis in brackets): (i) L1 mostly sunken into posterior edge of pygidium, with only the lobe apices protruding from the pygidial margin (at least half of each lobe protruding from pygidial margin); (ii) pygidium with submarginal dorsal ducts numbering 8 or 9 on each side (about 4 or 5 on each side); and (iii) perivulvar pores present in 5 groups, median group with 1–3 pores, each anterolateral group with 5–7 pores, and each posterolateral group with 7–9 pores (present in 3 groups, with median and anterolateral groups merged into a single group of 15–25 pores, and with 8–15 pores in each posterolateral group). (Jian, et al., 2023)
- Structure: Adult female enclosed in a puparium formed of the sclerotized cuticle of the second instar, external appearance yellowish or pale brown, elongate, about 1.2 mm long and 0.2 mm wide, with sides more-orless parallel, with margins thin and transparent; first-instar exuviae apical, colourless. Exposed body of adult female yellow, small (Figs 5 and 6). Scale cover of immature male coated with white wax, elongate, about 1.0 mm long and 0.2 mm wide, with sides almost parallel (broadening slightly towards rear end), dorsum with 3 very slight longitudinal ridges; first-instar exuviae pale yellow, situated at anterior end. Slide-mounted adult female irregularly fusiform, 600–650 (617) μm long, 240–280 (259) μm wide, rounded anteriorly, slightly broader at mesothorax; with sides approximately parallel from mesothorax to abdominal segment II, then gradually narrowing posteriorly before narrowing sharply at base of pygidium; pygidium rounded, but with distal portion narrowing slightly. (Jian, et al., 2023)
- Biology: Females found on the lower leaf surfaces near the midrib, separate from each other; immature males usually found around the females but separate from each other. Heavily infested leaves are wilted, with black necrotic spots beneath and around the scale insects. (Jian, et al., 2023)
