Remarks
- Systematics: This genus was long believed to be a synonym of Eriococcus; however, the presence of unusual enlarged tubular ducts on the type species of Eriococcus and other species from the Palearctic and Australian regions have caused many to treat them as valid genera (Borchsenius, 1948 & Miller & Gimpel, 1996). Based on morphological and molecular data collected in the laboratory of Gullan (personal communication, 1998) there is no basis for separating Acanthococcus and Eriococcus as distinct genera.
- General Remarks: Lindinger (1933a) erroneously synonymized Eriopeltis with Eriococcus. "Lindinger, 1933a:77, argued at some length for the use of Eriococcus Targioni-Tozzetti for this Eriopeltis zoological concept but his proposal seems based on his rigid concept that the type-species of a multiple species genus must be the first one listed, so it can be disregarded (Morrison & Morrison, 1922)." Lindinger (1933a) considered Atriplicia to be a junior synonym of Nidularia and Ferris (1955a) and Lindinger (1914) considered it to be a junior synonym of Eriococcus.
