Subfamily Diaspidinae, Tribe Lepidosaphidini
Chusqueaspis closely resembles Prodigiaspis Ferris but differs in having (condition in Prodigiaspis given in parenthesis): a turbinate body shape (body elongate oval or fusiform)
with the anus in center of pygidium (in anterior part of pygidium). It also resembles the type species of Protargionia Leonardi, a Neotropical genus recently synonymized with Pseudoparlatoria Cockerell by Normark et al. (2019a), but the species ofChusqueaspis differ from that species –Pseudoparlatoria larreae (Leonardi) – in several characters
(condition in P. larreae given in parenthesis).Chusqueaspis species have pores near the anterior and posterior spiracles (perispiracular pores absent), anus in center of pygidium (in posterior
part of pygidium in P. larreae), and marginal macroducts of the pygidium at most only slightly larger than other dorsal ducts (marginal macroducts much larger than other dorsal ducts). Chusqueaspis also differs from these other taxa in its host association, having been found only on bamboos of the genus Chusquea, whereas Prodigiaspis and Pseudoparlatoria larreae have never been found either on bamboo or on any other grass. Chusqueaspis also differs in its known habitat, having been found only in montane‐temperate rainforest, whereas
Prodigiaspis has been found only in tropical rainforest and P. larreae only in desert.(Amouroux, et al., 2020)
- Structure: Dorsal scale cover of female convex, subcircular initially, becoming oval or elongate‐oval at full maturity; exuviae subcentral or submarginal; ventral cover thick; to date found only on stems of bamboo of the genus Chusquea, mainly under the leaf sheath.
Slide‐mounted adult female body outline turbinate, broadest at mesothorax. Antennae simple; disc pores present near anterior and posterior spiracles. Pygidium with L1 well‐developed, rounded at apex; L2 well‐developed, bilobulate, both lobes rounded at apex; L3 and L4 sometimes developed, usually each
represented by a low sclerotised projection. Gland spines present. (Amouroux, et al., 2020)
- Biology: Chusqueaspis is presently the only recognized bamboo‐specialized genus native to anywhere outside Asia.
- General Remarks: Detailed description and phylogenetic tree in Amouroux, et al., 2020.
