Remarks

• Systematics: The binomen Anomalococcus hirsutus was published twice, as a Manuscript Name credited to Green, by Ramakrishna Ayyar (1924, 1926) both of which are Nomina Nuda. Ramakrishna Ayyar (1930) provided several characters distinguishing the former from A. indicus, and therefore under Article 12 of the ICZN, A. hirsutus became an available name, that should be credited to Ramakrishna Ayyar (1930).
• Structure: Female test highly convex; smooth, dorsal carina represented at most by a series of small tubercles; transverse carina absent. Male test elliptical; median carina prominent along with 7-8 transverse ridges (Lambdin & Kosztarab, 1973).
• Economic Importance: Prickly acacia now infests over 7 million hectares of the Mitchell grass downs in western Queensland, as well as scattered coastal infestations in Queensland, the Northern Territory and Western Australia. It costs primary producers AUD$9m per year due to decreasing pasture production and hindering the mustering of livestock. Based on host plant records, field host specificity, geographic range, seasonal incidence and damage levels, the scale insect Anomalococcus indicus Ayyar was considered the most promising agent. It was imported into Australia in 2011 for host specificity and biological studies. To date the only A. indicus found on a non-target plant were Neptunia major plants touching infested prickly acacia; where plants co-occurred but were not touching, no evidence of A. indicus has been found on any species including N. major. This should help assess the risk that A. indicus may pose to important non-target species in Australia. (Taylor & Dhileepan, 2018)
